Within the campaign for European Elections 2014 in Bulgaria, the BNT programme ‘Referendum’ will present something really ambitious – each Tuesday night six mini referendums will blend in one. Candidate MEPs from various political parties, coalitions and initiative committees will have to provide quick and grounded responses  to 6 statements, which are important for Bulgaria and the European Union. The statements are part of the European project ‘Glasovoditel’ (‘VoteMatch’).

‘Glasovoditel’ is a tool that allows citizens to test their political preferences before the elections by presenting them with a list of statemets that require yes, no or neutral answers. The results at the end of the test serve as a guide for voters to find out which political party or independent candidates most accurately represent their interests.

Every Tuesday until the day of the elections, 25th May, the MEP candidates from all political parties, coalitions and initiative committees in Bulgaria will complete this test during the live BNT programme ‘Referendum’. In each edition of the programme, they will be given 6 specific statements selected as the most popular.

The test includes 31 statements altogether and 6 are selected for the first edition of  ‘Glasovoditel’. Each participant will have up to 10 minutes  available to complete the test and to present arguments in support of their positions. The responses can be ‘agree’,’disagree’ or ‘abstain’.

During the ‘Referendum’ programme on 29 April, candidates from eight political forces debated for an hour and a half, live on BNT, on topics concerning wages, energy sector, unemployment and EU’s foreign policy. The participants in the programme were determined on the basis of lots drawn by the Central Election Commission in Bulgaria to specify the order in which they spoke in the disputes:

Margarita Mileva – party ‘Bulgarian Left’

Spas Spasov – ‘Bulgarian communist Party’

Rumyana Ugarchinska-Vincenti – an independent candidate

Aleksandar Karakachanov – ‘Green Party ‘

Atanas Chobanov – ‘Paty of the Greens’

Boiko Stankushev – ‘Blue Unity’

Simeon Kostadinov – ‘Nationalist parties of Bulgaria’

Galina Nikolova – ‘People’s Voice’.

The statements on which the MEP candidates had to present their positions were:

- The EU should promote the introduction of a minimum wage linked to the average salary in each member state;

- EU member states should not be allowed to subsidise nuclear power;

- The European Union should not accept any new member states;

- Member states must recognise same-sex marriages conducted in other EU countries;

- Bulgaria has to veto possible EU decision for economic sanctions against Russia;

- Only local government has to make decisions for building or land-swapping in Natura 2000.
