The MEP, Ivailo Kalfin, announced on Monday, 13th January, that he submitted resignation as head of the group of MEPs from the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) in the European Parliament.
In a letter to the leader of BSP, Sergei Stanishev (who is also the President of PES), Ivailo Kalfin notes that in his opinion the compromises in the coalitional policy and the appointments approach of the Bulgarian Socialist Party have reached the limits of acceptability. Currently the government of Bulgaria is led by BSP, in coalition with MRF (the Movement for Rights and Freedoms).
Kalfin considers that his publicly expressed arguments for transparency, for coalitional agreement, for avoiding the Elections Code being adopted immediately before elections and for a principles-led approach towards ‘Ataka” party, have not been received with understanding. According to him, the absence of clear positions does not lead to increase in the support to the left-wing governance and popularity. Therefore he does not think he can effectively lead the delegation of the Bulgarian socialists in the European Parliament. Kalfin’s theses about transparency in governance and political appointments policy have already been developed by him publicly.
Although he is not a member of the BSP, Kalfin appeared to be a political figure, on whom the left wing relied in key rivalries – they nominated him for a candidate to become Bulgaria’s President in 2011, run for the May 2013 elections backed by the left wing. Kalfin was a Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs in Stanishev’s Cabinet. (Sergei Stanishev was the Prime Minister of Bulgaria from 2005 to 2009) .
