Fifth national protest of road construction workers again demand to be paid and that minister of regional development resigns

Fifth consecutive national protest of the road construction companies in Bulgaria took place on October 12. They demand that the state pays them nearly BGN 900 million for work already completed.

The centre of the capital this morning was again blocked for about 3 hours by construction equipment and protesters in front of the Council of Ministers, and shortly after 11.00 they moved to the Ministry of Regional Development.

At 12.00 the protest ended and the crowd dispersed. However, they retain their demands for the resignation of the caretaker minister of regional development Violeta Komitova and a meeting with the caretaker Prime Minister Stefan Yanev.

We have not received salaries for 3 months. We want to get paid. My son and I work. I can't give my granddaughter BGN 2 to go to school, explained Valeri Stoyanov, a road builder.

Yesterday, senior government officials suggested that the protest was political. Apparently they were busy again and did not listen to what people were shouting, louder and louder. that their demands were economic. I say it again slowly so that Mrs. Komitova can hear it. The motivation that brought the people here is purely economic, Georgi Zlatev, from the Roads Chamber said.

From now on we will continue with the protests and we sincerely hope that the caretaker Prime Minister will take measures to normalise the situation in the industry. I want to address him once again. Contracts with all road construction companies are currently being checked. Their representatives are invited to a meeting with the caretaker minister of regional development at 1.00 pm today.
