Information has been extracted from the black box of the MiG-29 fighter jet which crashed into the Black sea near Shabla on June 9. This was announced at a briefing after the meeting of the Council of Ministers by the caretaker Minister of Defence, Georgi Panayotov on September 16.

The results confirm the findings of the Military Police from the initial report, which pointed to human error as the cause.

The final report is expected.

The black box of the fighter jet that crashed in the waters of the Black Sea was sent to Russia for downloading the data after it was retrieved from a depth of 70 metres with a broken ribbon cable.

A Bulgarian Air Force MiG-29 crashed into the Black Sea in the early hours of June 9 while taking part in the Shabla 21 training exercise. The plane crashed in the open sea near Shabla.

Bulgaria’s Ministry of Defence said on June 10 said that during the search operation it was found that the pilot of the fighter aircraft, Major Valentin Terziev, died on June 9 during the training exercise for shooting at an air target (illuminated parachute target) at night.

Bulgaria’s Defence Ministry on June 24 announced that the black box had been found at a depth of 70 metres.

but Caretaker Defence Minister said on June 25 that technical issues prevented the data being extracted from it and Bulgaria will seek help from the manufacturer from Russia to read the data from the black box.

The box is depressurized, was filled with water and has a broken ribbon cable, which makes reading the data at this stage risky and almost impossible, explained Defence Minister Georgi Panayotov.
