A milestone queue of waiting cargo trucks was formed at the border point "Kulata - Promahon" on Bulgarian territory. The tail is 8 km long and reaches the village of Marikostinino.
Bulgaria’s Border Police have explained that the delays are due to checks by the Customs Agency and that there is no problem in their information systems.
The traffic problems are caused by road repairs on the Greek side and also by the heavy traffic on Fridays. They also added that compared to June last year, the traffic of TIR lorries through Kulata border crossing increased by 10%. The jam affects only cargo vehicles. Lorry drivers said they had been waiting for 10 hours to cross the border while cars go very fast and have to wait just a couple of minutes.
The district governor of Blagoevgrad area explained that an additional exit route would be provided in order to alleviate the traffic. There is an emergency team on site in case some of the drivers need medical help because the hot weather with temperatures reaching 30 degrees.
The Ministry of Interior advises drivers to use other roads to cross the border because the repairs will continue for another month.
