More than 700,000 students start school on September 15, including 58,593 first-graders

A total of 706,857 students will start school at 2,357 schools across the country on September 15. Some 58,593 will start school for the first time.

The new school year also begins for 32,266 students in 375 Bulgarian schools abroad.

Only seven of the 28 districts in the country are fully staffed with teachers - Gabrovo, Lovech, Sliven, Stara Zagora, Targovishte, Haskovo and Yambol.

There are 436 vacancies, most of whch are in Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna and Sofia region. Kindergarten teachers, full-time teachers, mathematics, English and primary school teachers are most in demand.

At the request of the Ministry of Education, the Regional Departments of Education are updating their database with specialists who are ready to join the system of pre-school and school education. These are mostly retired teachers and educators who are currently outside the education system. It will also be possible to register university students from pedagogical specialties who wish to teach in the specialty they study.

Some 1,039 psychologists are employed in kindergartens and schools, as well as 793 speech therapists. There are 124 more psychologists and 129 speech therapists in the Regional Centres for Support of the Inclusive Education Process.

At the beginning of the new school year, the last 40,000 devices for students needed for distance learning in an electronic environment will be provided. 15,500 laptops and tablets have already been ordered under existing framework contracts and will be delivered by the end of this month. In addition, a public procurement tender has been launched for 24,500 tablets, which are expected to arrive in schools in October this year.

When switching to online learning, all students and teachers will have access to the Internet from their homes. Schools will pay the costs of children from low-income families. This will ensure mass participation in distance learning, if introduced as a result of deteriorating epidemic situation.

If teaching online, teachers will continue to receive additional BGN 30 to offset the cost of consumables, including Internet access.

In the current 2021, the transportation costs of 17,800 teachers from kindergartens, schools and Centres for Support of Personal Development will be reimbursed.
