The Bulgarian Parliament gave a mandate to the Minister of Energy to resume the efforts to build "Belene" Nuclear power plant along with a strategic investor, on a market basis and without providing any state guarantee by separating the assets and liabilities of the project into a different project company. The decision was taken with 172 votes "in favour", 14 "against" and 2 abstentions. GERB and United Patriots proposed the draft.
The Minister should organize, coordinate and supervise negotiations with potential investors and equipment manufacturers, take action to develop a strategic investor selection procedure and propose options for structuring the project by 31 October 2018.
The MPs have recommended the Government take action to cancel its decision of 29 March 2012 for the construction of the power plant.
With 74 votes "in favour", 40 "against" and 81 abstentions, the Parliament rejected the draft of Bulgarian Socialist Party for Bulgaria to cancel the moratorium voted by the National Assembly on 29 March 2012 for the construction of "Belene" NPP.
