The freezing weather in the North Bulgarian city of Rousse forced a large number of homeless people to seek help in the local shelter “The Good Samaritan”. The capacity of the homeless shelter is already full and couldn’t provide enough lunch meals. The reason is that funding has been reduced by 63%.
Due to the significant budget cutback, since the beginning of the year the shelter is experiencing difficulties and will be able to pay only the heating bills.
The lounge of the shelter is empty and the kitchen counter, from where until yesterday soups and second courses were served for lunch is now closed. On the morning of 7th of January, the 60 homeless people accommodated in the shelter received a cup of tea and a bun. Next time they will be served food will be in the evening.
As a result of changes in the regulations made by the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy, the budget for the homeless shelter was cut by 250,000 BGN. Until March, the shelter will be able to provide breakfasts and dinner because it has received a donation. Funds will be available for the next three months as a result of savings from last year.
In order to solve the problem, some of the homeless people will receive lunch and dinner under the “Social Patronage” services of the municipality in Rousse. However this will be provided only for 10 people. Others will rely on their pensions.
