President Radev completed his round of consultations with parliamentary parties on forming a government

On August 18, Bulgaria’s President Rumen Radev completed his current round of consultations with representatives of parliamentary groups on forming a government. He met Democratic Bulgaria, the Movement for Rights and Freedoms and the “Rise Up Bulgaria! We’re Coming” coalition.

A regular government is needed on the background of the looming crises, they said.

Before the consultations began, President Rumen Radev said with concern:

It would be extremely irresponsible if this Parliament ended without a government and an updated budget. Thus, the caretaker government will be with tied hands.

Democratic Bulgaria came to the consultations hoping to find the formula for forming a cabinet. The head of state reiterated the need for a regular government because of a number of challenges.

GERB-UDF confirmed they would return the mandate. Radev said that the consultations would lead him to decide to which group to hand the third mandate to seek to form a government that Parliament would vote into office.

Hristo Ivanov, the co-leader of Democratic Bulgaria said that there should be a government to run the country through the winter, amid the crises it is facing.

After the meeting, Hristo Ivanov described the third mandate as a crisis.

Without “There is Such a People”, a cabinet cannot happen, the arithmetic is clear. We believe that common sense, if not immediately, must gradually take effect. We will not support a cabinet nominated by the Bulgarian Socialist Party. If someone expects us to vote for cats in a sack, this is not going to happen, he added.

Radev’s meeting with the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) was marked by tension.

The President called MRF for dialogue. The movement set a definite condition.

We have a definite condition from which we would not back down: Restoration of normalcy in politics and democracy in our country. The country needs a regular cabinet. We have always given our contribution in the name of the stability of the country and we will give it again, said Mustafa Karadayi, chairman of the MRF.

The departure of the MRF leader of the Consultative Council on National Security two days ago provoked an exchange of remarks between Radev and Karadayi. The reason was again the dual citizenship of the caretaker Minister of Economy Kiril Petkov.

Mustafa Karadayi - Chairman of the MRF: I had a question to caretaker Minister Petkov - when did he apply for renunciation of foreign citizenship.

Rumen Radev - President of Bulgaria: I do not think it is very appropriate for you to raise this issue. Being a citizen does not mean just having a passport, but carrying Bulgaria in your heart. I asked Mr. Petkov who his motherland was and he answered - Bulgaria. Will you tell me which one is yours?

Maya Manolova of “Rise up BG. We are Coming!” said that an attempt to form a government with the third mandate should avoid the mistakes made by Slavi Trifonov’s “There is Such a People”party. Regardless of the force to which the mandate will be handed over, we will make every effort to realize it. We want this time the talks to be entirely public and transparent. We will insist that ministers from the caretaker cabinet join without the participation of party members, she said.
