The estimated costs to build a gas hub on the territory of Bulgaria are 2,2 billion euro, shows the project which Bulgaria’s Prime Minister, Boyko Boissov, presented at the meeting of the High Level Group on Central and South Eastern Europe Gas Connectivity (CESEC), which took place on 9th of February in Sofia. Further 140 million euro will be needed for modernization of the existing infrastructure.
PM Borissov has said that the geographical location of Bulgaria gives the potential to be a strategic partner. The country has a well-designed national gas distribution network, a balanced gas transit system and a gas storage facility, PM said. Bulgaria’s own gas and oil reserves, which are being developed at the moment, the low domestic consumption, which provides capacity for the gas transit are among the advantages Bulgaria offers, Borissov added.
Borissov said that this was a key project for the building of a single European energy market, for the overcoming of the energy dependency of South–East Europe, for the liberalization and development of a competitive gas market, compliant with the EU legislation.
In addition to the energy efficiency, the gas infrastructure causes less harmful emissions in comparison with Thermal Power Plants, PM Borissov commented.
According to him, the modernization of the gas transmission network will enable the use of innovative technologies, moving towards an automated system for management and balancing of the gas transmission network.
The participants in the CESEC agreed that the most important goal was all countries in South-East Europe to secure at least three different sources of natural gas, said Maroš Šefčovič, Vice-President of the European Commission, in charge of Energy Union.
The working group which was founded in Sofia will work on both political and expert level, Šefčovič said. The experts will work on issues related to the energy sector in South-East Europe and the Adriatic region. He also said that during the meeting, a quick review was made of the most important structural projects in the energy sector for co-financing with EU funds.
