Record: Customs Agency Collects Nearly €1bn in Revenue in August

The Bulgarian Customs Agency collected its highest monthly revenue on record in August 2026, at nearly €1 billion. The figures come from preliminary data on revenue from excise duties, import VAT and customs duties, the agency said.

The record revenue in August follows the highest-ever monthly figures recorded for June and July. The data show that in 2026, each of the summer months has delivered better results than the corresponding month in previous years.

In August, the Customs Agency collected €965.6 million – its highest monthly revenue ever. This was €211 million (28%) more than the amount collected in July and €372.2 million (62.7%) more than the revenue recorded in August 2025.

From 1 January to 31 August 2026, according to current data, the Customs Agency collected €5,518.2 million, which is €839.0 million (17.9%) more than in the corresponding period of 2025.

Some 89.7% of the increase recorded since the beginning of the year is due to higher revenue collected over the past three and a half months, from the formation of the regular government and the change in the leadership of the Customs Agency in mid-May until now.

Between 18 May and 31 August 2026, €2,583.7 million was collected, €752.9 million (41.1%) more than in the same period of 2025. All types of revenue recorded an increase, with the largest rise in absolute terms coming from excise duties, followed by import VAT and customs duties.

The positive trend seen over the past three months of reducing outstanding excise duty liabilities is also continuing. By the end of August, payments towards liabilities from previous periods exceeded newly established liabilities by €3.5 million.
