Signiant rise in the water levels of rivers in Bulgaria are possible on 10th of March, Bulgaria’s Ministry of Environment and Water said based on information from the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology.
Code yellow warning for heavy rain was issued in 18 districts in Bulgaria – Vidin, Montana, Vratsa, Pleven, Lovech, Gabrovo, Veliko Turnovo, Sofia – distrct, Sofia – city, Pernik, Kyustendil, Blagoevgrad, Pazardzhik, Plovdiv, Stara Gazora, Smolyan, Kurdhzli and Haskovo.
According to the forecast, rainfall of up to 15-20 litres per square metre is expected in these districts over the next 24 hours.
Water levels of the rivers in the Danube basin are expected to rise as a result of the expected rain. The predicted precipitation for the catchments of the rivers Iskar, Yantra and Rusenski Lom will be above the average annual level, but below the flood alert threshold.
On 10th and 11th of March, temporary water level increase is possible for the rivers flowing onto the Black Sea basin. The levels of the catchments of the rivers Mesta and Struma in the West White Sea basin are expected to significantly rise on 10th and 11th of March.
Water levels rise is also expected in the rivers flowing into East White Sea basin. From 10th to 12th of March, significant increase is possible in the middle and lower reaches of Tundhza river, in the whole catchment of Maritsa river and the upper reach of Arda.
