The ‘South Stream’ project is extremely important for reducing the energy dependency of the countries from South East Europe, especially in the context of the crisis in Ukraine. This was the position, which the Bulgarian Foreign Minister, Kristian Vigenin, expressed during ‘The Western Balkans and the European Union’ forum, held in Thessaloniki, Greece, on 8th May.
Specific energy projects, electric power transmission and transport projects were among the topics discussed during the conference in Thessaloniki. Because of the crisis in Ukraine, the focus was placed on gas transmission projects which will help the countries from South East Europe become less dependent on Russian gas supply.
“Despite the complexity of the situation now and the complicated relations with Russia, the ‘South Stream’ project should not drop down the agenda because it is a real alternative, which will ensure security of gas supply. It is true, the source is one, but we will not be dependent on an unstable transit country”, Minister Vigenin said.
