In a sitting on 21st May, Sofia District Court pronounced that a final decision will be given on the court case against the former Prime Minister and former King, Simeon Saxe-Coburg, concerning the ownership of ‘Tsarska Bistritsa’ royal palace. The court decision will be issued within the deadlines appointed by the law. The legal case started almost 3 years ago. The state filed a claim for a compensation at the amount of over 960 000 BGN against the ex Prime Minister of Bulgaria and his sister Maria-Louiza Hrobok for loss of profit and benefits forgone suffered as a result of their possession of the palace and the adjacent forests.

In addition to the ‘Tsarska Bistritsa’ palace case, in 2011 the state brought lawsuits against the ex-King’s family over the ownership of ‘Sitnyakovo’, ‘Saragyol’ and ‘Vrana’ royal residences, and for 16 000 decares of forests in the Rila Mountains, which were used by the Bulgarian Royal family before the ousting in 1946 and were returned to it in 2002 and 2003.

At the end of November 2013, Simeon Saxe-Cobourg and his sister Maria Louiza lost the legal battle for the ‘Krichim’ Palace. The Supreme Court of Cassation then ruled that the palace and 370 decares of adjacent agricultural land belonged to the state.

The properties were restored to the ex-king in 2001-2005 when he was the Prime Minister of Bulgaria, but after 2009 the government initiated proceedings to regain the ownership.

Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (Tsar Simeon II) is the last king of Bulgaria. After the death of his father Boris III, Simeon II reigned by regency (as a child from the age of 6 to 9) from 1943 to 1946 when the monarchy was overthrown as a result of referendum in support to the creation of a Republic. Simeon went into exile.

In 2001 he founded a liberal political party in Bulgaria, which was named ‘National Movement Simeon the Second’. The party won the general elections and Simeon Saxe-Coburg was elected Prime Minister, serving until 2005.
