Two people are dead and several are missing after the torrential rains led to flooding in the town of Mizia in the North East of Bulgaria over the weekend. The river Skut was reported to have overflown on 3rd of August.
Over 600 people were evacuated.
At places the water surge reached 5 metres and people had to find sanctuary on the roofs of the houses until the rescue teams arrive.
Many roads were under water and the access to villages and towns in the area was difficult and some road sections were temporarily closed.
On 4th of August the flood water started to recede, but revealed many damages. People have been left with damaged properties. The disastrous flooding undermined foundations of many houses and caused walls and whole houses to collapse. Many bridges and roads have been destroyed. The most affected are the villages in municipalities of Vratsa, Byala Slatina, Hairedin, Mezdra and Krivodol.
The Bulgarian Red Cross has called for businesses and commercial chains to make urgent donations for the residents of the town of Mizia.
