The total number of coronavirus cases confirmed in Bulgaria is 1290 on April 26, the national task force said in a daily briefing at 08.00 pm.

The active cases are 1030.

Some 56 new cases were registered in the country over the past 24 hours, 22 of them being in Sofia. Thirteen were confirmed in Kyustendil, where there is a new outbreak. Twelve are from Duptnitsa region, five from Vidin, four in Sliven, three in Pleven, three in Blagoevgrad and two in Rouse. Pazarrdzhik, Veliko Turnovo, Stara Zagora and Yambol each reported one new case.

In Stara Zagora, the latest patient is connected with the village of Panicharevo, which was placed under a lock down after a 60 year old man diagnosed with Covid-19 escaped from hospital in Stara Zagora and went to this village, Panicharevo, his home village by taxi.

The new cases include 3 children: two boys at the age of 5 and 7 from Dupnitsa and a 3 year old boy from Vidin. They are not hospitalised.

The number of Covid-19 patients among the medical professionals is also increasing, with 3 new cases, thus bringing the total to 138. The latest cases are a doctor, a nurse and a health-care assistant, all from Pirogov emergency hospital in Sofia. They work in various wards, none of them is from surgery.

A total of 205 people have recovered, including some medical staff.

One person died in the past 24 hours. The total fatalities are now 55.

292 Covid-19 patients are in hospitals, 37 are in intensive care. Currently, Bulgaria is climbing towards the next peak. The number of cases reached a level that had not been reached before. New outbreaks occur, with relatively large number of people infected with the virus.

There is no common opinion in the world on which is the better option for schools - there are two strategies: one is for opening primary schools and kindergartens, aiming to get parents back to work. However, any such measure can lead to many being infected. The second model is to open secondary schools, because they have more important exams. Also, thidea is that their behaviour may be more responsible during epidemic - wearing masks, keeping the social distance, and using disinfectants. For both categories it is recommended to reduce the number of children and two shifts. All of this will lead to larger number of infected people, which is why all countries in the world are channeling more resources to hospitals and medics - they are starting to turn gyms all over the world into field hospitals - the question is can our country take that risk, the head of the task force, General Mutafchiyski said.

Regarding the opening of small guest houses, the chief of task force commented that this would not have notably beneficial effect on the mental health of the nation, but would certainly complicate the epidemiological situation in the country.
