All 18 Afghan nationals who took part in the unrest in the refugee accommodation centre in the South Bulgarian town of Harmanli will remain in custody, the local court decided on 28th of November. The defendants face charges of hooliganism and resistance to law enforcement officers, which was characterized with particular cynicism and boldness.
The migrants’ lawyers demanded lighter supervision measures but according to the court the offence was characterized with disrespect to the society, cynicism and boldness and added there was a risk that the accused would take flight.
One of the accused admitted he participated in the disturbances in the refugee camp but denied throwing stones at the police. Four others denied participation and said they were in their rooms.
The regional prosecutor’s office in Harmanli will press charges for destruction of state property and physical injuries once the assessment reports are ready.
