A new outbreak of African Swine Fever has been reported at the largest industrial pig farm in Bulgaria. It is located in the village of Brushlen in Bulgaria’s Rousse district. State of emergency was declared in the district of Pleven today, July 24, because of outbreaks in farms in private yards. The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency is tightening the control on the farms to halt the spread of the infection.
The farm in Brushlen has 40,000 pigs that will be culled.
The state of emergency in the district of Rousse will stay in place because of the new outbreak of African swine fever.
Steps have already been taken to restrict access to the Brushlen farm. It is likely that the culling of animals will begin today to stop the spread of the disease. A problem may be that the village of Brushlen is located in a water catchment area and the Karimok-Brushlen Nature Reserve, which falls into Natura 2000, is nearby. Slivo Pole Municipality says they have informed the institutions in due time.
