BULGARIA’S BORDER POLICE FOUND 20 ILLEGAL MIGRANTS NEAR LESOVO CHECKPOINT

Over the past day, Bulgaria’s border police stopped attempts by a total of 215 migrants to cross into the country illegally.

The police found 10 illegal migrants concealed in the cargo area of a lorry at Lesovo checkpoint at the border with Turkey.

On the morning of 31st of May, a lorry arrived at Lesovo checkpoint at Bulgaria’s border with Turkey. The driver was a 60 year old Turkish national. The lorry was transporting tractors. The border police officer on duty carried out a check using a gas detector, which identified increased levels of carbon dioxide in the cargo area. An inspection of the lorry identified that the cable seal was cut and joined with a needle. The police found the 10 illegal migrants concealed in the cargo area next to the tractors. The migrants were without ID documents, claiming they were Syrians. The driver and the migrants were detained.

On 30th of May, border police officers at Lesovo detained another group of 10 illegal migrants, holders of Afghan passports. They were found by means of a gas detector in a lorry with Romanian registration.

Over the past 24 hours, Bulgaria’s border police prevented attempts by 215 migrants to illegally cross into the country. 62 of them tried to enter Bulgaria illegally from Greece at the region of Novo Selo border crossing, but were identified by thermal imaging device. After seeing the Bulgarian patrols spotted them, the migrants turned back. The Greek authorities were notified about the incident. The border police at the Bulgarian-Greek border prevented attempts from other 155 migrants trying to illegally cross into the country.
