The rule of law report of the European Commission identifies problems that have been obvious for the Bulgarians for years. As critical as it is for Bulgaria, it is as self-critical for the EU because it is a self-recognition of a long-standing failure in the fight against corruption.
The continuation of the Verification Mechanism, although in another form, is proof that the government is not receiving European indulgence precisely because of this failure. This was commented by President Rumen Radev in the historical capital Veliko Turnovo on October 1 after the opening of the academic year at the University in the city.
My gratitude and support is for all members of the public who have stopped waiting for findings and decisions from outside to deal with political corruption, bad media environment, oligarchic dependencies, the lack of control on the Prosecutor General and are fighting to get our country back, the President said.
He also commented on the call by the Union of Judges for the Supreme Judicial Council to remove the Prosecutor General.
The systematic violation of the law and the general interest by the Prosecutor General in his quest to protect the government and certain oligarchs undermines the rule of law and requires a response from the entire judicial system. I believe that with joint efforts we will give a chance to the honest prosecutors for a real fight against corruption, explained President Radev.
