On 22nd of April, Bulgaria marks the Earth day with many initiatives across the country, including tree planting, lessons, discussions and presentations.
The idea, which unites people from all over the world is to motivate them to protect the environment.
The Earth Day was first celebrated on 22nd of April in 1970. After the ravages of the 1969 massive oil spill in California, millions of university and college students, and their parents organized protests in the USA and Canada against the deterioration of the environment.
Today, the Earth Day unites people from more than 170 countries around the world.
This year’s theme is Trees for the Earth. Currently, our planet loses over 15 billion trees every year due to deforestation, acquisition of land and poor forest management. As Earth Day moves closer to its 50th anniversary, the goal is to plant 7.8 billion trees by then – one tree for every person on the planet. Trees help combat climate changes, they absorb excess and harmful CO2 from our atmosphere. In a single year, 4 acres of young forests absorb the same amount of CO2 produced by driving the average car 40,000 km.
