A drug trafficking network was disrupted by Bulgarian Chief Directorate for Combating Organised Crime and the Specilised Prosecutor’s Office on 21st of March. A freight forwarding company transported heroin in concealments from Turkey through Bulgaria and Germany to Holland, whilst in the opposite direction, on the same route, it transported high quality of cocaine.

Four Bulgarians have been arrested, including a 34 year old woman. One of the suspects involved in the drug trafficking network was arrested in Germany.

The work on disentangling the network continues in partnership with Turkey’s authorities. More arrests are expected.

So far, the investigative team identified that the freight forwarders got involved in the “additional activity” of drug trafficking in October 2015. The leader of the group, Plamen Popchev, started, along with the official activity, to add heroin to the shipments. The heroin was delivered from Turkey and was intended for Holland. For the purpose, one TIR lorry, several vans and minibuses were equipped with special concealments for illicit drugs.

A TIR lorry loaded with 28 kg of high quality cocaine, not mixed with other substances, was detained near Bulgaria’s town of Etropole, Western Bulgaria. The concealment was 6m long, was placed in the chassis of the trailer and was isolated in such a manner that it wasn’t detectable by X-ray machines. It contained 16 sections and was disguised as if it was part of the construction.

At the same time, 16 kg of heroin were found in a minivan in Germany, transported to Holland.

The investigative authorities identified that the heroin was moved from Turkey to Bulgaria in backpacks, through the ‘green border’. It was then loaded in the concealments of several vehicles in the region of Malko Turnovo and shipped to Holland.

An undercover officer from the anti-mafia unit was infiltrated in the group with the task to find out details about the return route, on which the cocaine was delivered from Holland to Turkey.
