On 6th of April, Bulgarian customs officers from the anti-drug trafficking unit at “Sofia Airport” customs house, in collaboration with the prosecutor’s office, disrupted an international drug-trafficking group.
The customs officers seized postal packages containing 28 kg of khat during an attempt for smuggled import of narcotic substances from Ethiopia. After a speicialised operation on the territory of Plovdiv and coordinated activities between the customs officers from “Sofia Airport” customs house and units of Bulgaria’s Ministry of Interior in the city of Plovdiv and Plovdiv customs house, a Bulgarian citizen was detained at the time of receiving the packages.
The seized khat was at the value of 912,000 BGN. Khat is a plant grown in Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia and Yemen, an amphetamine-like stimulant.
