On 10th of August, Bulgaria’s Council of Ministers voted to approve the resignation of general Rumen Radev. The Bulgarian President Plevneliev is expected to issue a decree on the release of the General Rumen Radev as Commander of the Bulgarian Air Force. General Radev is seen as the most likely presidential candidate of the centre-left Bulgarian Socialist Party. He resigned on the 1st of August. As official motives for his decision, Radev pointed disagreement with the defence policy of the cabinet and meeting the retirement requirements.
At the start of the cabinet meeting, while the media were still present in the room, Prime Minister Boyko Borissov said that he had heard “reproaches” that the Cabinet should have held an extraordinary meeting to vote on Radev’s resignation. There was no sense in that, Borissov said. He ordered the item from the agenda concerning Radev’s resignation to be brought forward.
Borissov instructed Defence Minister Nikolai Nenchev to ensure that Radev’s resignation papers were processed as quickly as possible and reached the President’s desk the same day.
