The Bulgarian government nominated the European Commission Vice-President for Budget and Human Resources, Kristalina Georgieva, as the candidate for the post of United Nations Secretary-General, Prime Minister Boyko Borissov said at the cabinet meeting on 28th of September.
According to PM Borissov, at the previous meeting, the cabinet gave Irina Bokova a last chance in the 26th of September straw poll for the next UN Secretary-General, but in view of the result she achieved, the cabinet thinks that the best move would be to nominate Georgieva as the candidate for the UN top job. In the most recent straw poll among UN Security Council members, Irina Bokova ranked sixth.
Bulgaria’s Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov also commented the decision of the government to transfer its support from Irina Bokova to Kristalina Georgieva. Mitov said that that the negative trend from the straw poll clearly showed that new candidacy was needed. He noted that Georgieva had a serious chance of winning the race to become the next UN Secretary-General and added that Bulgaria would seek the support of all countries from South-East Europe.
