On 21st of October, Bulgaria’s Parliament adopted at first reading the amendments to the Electoral Code, concerning the removal of the limit of 35 polling stations for Bulgarian voters in countries from the European Union.
The lawmakers discussed 12 drafts for amendments to the Electoral Code but adopted only 3.
The amendments were approved after 5 hours of disputes and pre-election bickering. The amendments came after the main ruling party GERB, the coalition partner Reformist Bloc and the Patriotic Front reached a consensus on Monday, 17th of October.
The parliamentary majority decided to remove the limit of maximum 35 polling stations per foreign country for Bulgarians abroad, but only for the countries in the EU. The limit of 35 polling stations remains for Turkey, the United States and Australia.
As regards the checkbox “I do not support anyone” on the ballot paper, the majority agreed with the suggestion made by the Reformist Bloc that such votes should be counted as valid in the final results of the elections but only at majoritarian elections, such as parliamentary and mayoral but not at general elections.
