Nicos Anastasiades, President of the Republic of Cyprus, is on an official visit to Bulgaria on 22-23 February, at the invitation of his Bulgarian counterpart Rosen Plevneliev.

The two Heads of State opened a joint Bulgarian-Cypriot business forum in Sofia on 23rd of February. They both noted that trade and economic co-operation between the two countries had grown significantly in the recent years, but believed there was a potential to expand it even further.

Cyprus is among the leading investors in Bulgaria with an investment volume of 2.1 billion euro. Bulgaria’s President encouraged the Cypriot business to expand their activities in Bulgaria and listed the advantages of investing in Bulgaria. Bulgaria is an island of stability in the region, its economy has grown steadily and is the sixth fastest growing economy in the EU for 2015, Plevneliev emphasized.

The two presidents agreed that the bilateral agreements signed on 22nd of February for co-operation in the areas of energy, agriculture and tourism would boost the business relations between the two countries.

After talks between them on 22nd of February, President Plevneliev said that Cyprus could contribute to the energy diversification of South Eastern Europe.

Plevneliev and Anastasiades expect the European Union to support the development of energy infrastructure in South Eastern Europe, which would increase the energy security of every country in the region.

The development of the “Aphrodite” gas field in the economic zone of the Republic of Cyprus and the project to build a gas pipeline from the eastern Mediterranean to continental Europe was in the interest of all countries in the Balkans, Plevneliev said. He pointed that the construction of the gas connection between Bulgaria and Greece would contribute to turning Bulgaria into an energy hub in the Balkans and would become part of the future North-South corridor. Bulgaria supports any project that results in genuine diversification of energy supplies and establishment of fair market prices for all countries in the region.

Plevneliev and Anastasiades also discussed the migration crisis and seeking a collective approach for solving the problem with migrants. They pointed that a difference should be made between those fleeing war and economic migrants and that control on the external borders of the EU should be strengthened.

On 22nd of February, President Anastasiades also had talks with the Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov and the Chairperson of Bulgaria’s Parliament, Tsetska Tstacheva.
