On 21st of April, the Bulgarian Parliament voted at second reading to approve compulsory voting in elections.

The MPs adopted the amendments to the Electoral Code, which introduce compulsory voting.

109 MPs voted in favour, 74 voted against and 10 abstained.

The amendments were supported by the votes of the centre-right GERB, nationalist alliance Patriotic Front, cenre-left ABV party and MPs from Bulgarian Democratic Centre, nationalist Ataka party and two MPs from the cenre-right coalition Reformist Bloc.

The MPs also decided that referendums and elections would not be held on one and the  same day.
