Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Boyko Borissov met with Interpol Secretary General, Jürgen Stock., who is visiting Bulgaria on the occasion of 30 years since Bulgaria's renewal of membership in Interpol. "We are convinced of the key role of Interpol in the field of security worldwide. We continue our active and fruitful cooperation with determination," said Borissov on December 20.
The Prime Minister emphasized the successful participation of our country in various projects of the international criminal police organization and the implementation of operations in important areas such as the fight against trafficking in arms, drugs, trafficking in human beings and migrants, which are among the country’s main priorities.
Borissov praised the trainings conducted in the country, organised and financed by the General Secretariat of Interpol. This year, there are three, focused on fight against trafficking in human beings in the Balkan region, on work with database for stolen weapons and on countering vehicle crime.
"It is especially important for us that these trainings also include the Balkan region. As you know, cooperation with all countries in the region is a constant priority for Bulgaria," Borissov added.
He stressed that the exchange of information with the Western Balkans is mainly carried out through Interpol and bilaterally, so it is important to strengthen contacts at all levels and in all areas of mutual interest.
The meeting also discussed Bulgaria's hosting of the Aqaba Process next year, which is thematically related to Bulgaria's initiative to develop the Western Balkans and to strengthen international and regional cooperation in the security sector.
Bulgaria was a member of Interpol from 1923 to 1958 and then membership was renewed during the 58th session of the Interpol General Assembly on November 27, 1989.
