Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic attended the opening ceremony of the TurkStream project in Istanbul on January 8.

Vladimir Putin, President of Russia: This is a unique, unprecedented, deep-water pipeline. Two parallel pipes with a capacity of nearly 16 billion cubic meters were installed. The first pipe will deliver gas from Western Siberia to Turkey. The second pipe will transport gas through Turkey to the Balkans, including Bulgaria, Serbia and Greece.
This will undoubtedly have a positive impact not only in the Black Sea region and Turkey, but also in many Southern European countries. It will increase energy security across Europe.
Recep Erdogan, President of Turkey: Close cooperation between Turkey and Russia is evident in the latest joint project, TurkStream. The pipeline is a project where we have put a lot of efforts, and it is historic for the region.
Out of the 31.5 billion cubic metres of gas, 15.7 billion cubic metres - without the mediation of any country will be delivered to our country, and about 15 million people will be able to benefit from it.
Turkey and Russia set an example for co-operation and will continue to sign their joint projects, and we see Europe's great interest in the project. Thanks to its investments in recent years, Turkey will become an energy hub in the region.

The TurkStream pipeline will provide Europe's energy security, President Putin said.

His Turkish host indicated that Russia is the main gas supplier to Turkey and the two countries will continue to develop their cooperation not only in energy but also in other areas.

Erdogan said the name of "TurkStream" was given by "his dear friend Putin".

The TurkStream gas pipeline is designed to supply gas to the Turkish market. A second pipe will supply southern and south-eastern Europe with blue fuel.

The second line is expected to leave Turkey via Bulgaria through the Balkan Stream and supply gas to Serbia, Hungary and Slovakia.

TurkStream will transit 3.5 billion gas annually.

Prior to the official inauguration, Prime Minister Borissov spoke with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic. Borissov noted that the implementation of the Balkan Stream project will provide an opportunity for natural gas deliveries from various sources at competitive prices forBulgaria and neighbouring countries and for the region of South-East Europe. Vucic confirmed that Serbia will also call the project with the name Balkan Stream.
