Bulgaria’s Chief Prosecutor, Ivan Geshev, ordered the Minister of Interior and the Chairperson of the State Agency for National Security to check and comply with the requirements of the Waste Management Act, the Environmental Protection Act and their respective by-laws on waste storage in the zones of all mines out of operation on the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria.
In the course of the inspection the number, location and data of the latest concessionaire, user or recultivator of the non-operating mines on the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria should be determined, as well as the type and origin of the waste stored therein, including whether they were subject to transborder trasnportation.
The scope of the inspection shall also include the actions of the competent control authorities.
In the event of identifying a crime of a general nature, the Chief Prosecutor ordered the relevant Prosecutor's offices to be informed immediately.
