In recent weeks, the President's public rhetoric has escalated in relation to Russia's ongoing war of aggression in Ukraine. The President is placing himself above the National Assembly and creating artificial divisions in society and repeating his own theses, which drastically deviate both from the decisions taken by an overwhelming majority of the Bulgarian Parliament and from the united voice of NATO and EU allies and partners, coalition "We Continue the Change - Democratic Bulgaria" said in a statement on February 15.
They insist the President and the caretaker government:
- to respect the decisions of the highest body of the state - the Bulgarian Parliament, which are binding on all institutions, including the presidential, all organisations and citizens;
- to implement the decision to provide military aid to Ukraine, adopted by 148 votes of the Bulgarian Parliament, as well as the ratified international agreement between Bulgaria and Ukraine;
- not to take decisions and express positions in European and international formats that contradict the country's long-standing commitments to the alliances to which Bulgaria is bound by international treaties;
- comply with the country's strategic priorities, including for joining the euro zone and Schengen, as formulated by the Bulgarian Parliament and the last regular government.
