March 10 is marked in Bulgaria as the Holocaust Memorial Day, on which the country honours the memory of those who rescued the Bulgarian Jews from extermination in the Nazi death camps in the World War II.
On this date, 77 years ago, some 50,000 Jews were rescued thanks to the unprecedented uniting of Bulgarian public figures, clergymen, politicians and members of the public. Bulgaria became the only country, an ally of Nazi Germany, which did not allow any of its Jewish citizens to be deported to the death camps.
Commemoration ceremonies took place in Bulgaria’s capital Sofia.
