day anti government protests

On day 40 of the protests against the government and the Chief Prosecutor, traffic blockades at three key crossroads in Sofia remain in place: at Eagles’ Bridge; at Sofia University and at Independence square (outside the Council of Ministers).

Tension occurred at the crossroads in the area of the Romanian embassy. A car attempted to go through the crossroads, protesters gathered around the vehicle and began banging on it. Shortly after that, the police arrived at the scene. The car was let through the blockade, but the protesters argued that the female driver bumped the car into some of them.

Traffic blockade at the Romanian embassy crossroads was lifted at 23:00. Protesters left the junction.

Earlier this evening, protesters were throwing eggs at the building of the Cabinet. Then they went on the usual procession to Eagles’ Bridge.

The organisers of the protests, the so called “Poisonous Trio” said at a news conference that a powerful nationwide protest was being prepared. The date is not yet known. They added they had information that a change of the Prime Minister is being prepared but did not wish to specifically name the possible successor of Boyko Borissov.

The Poisonous Trio also made public a report about corruption in a municipal sanitation company.

Shortly after 8:00 in the morning, activists of the "Boets" civic association (“Bulgaria United with One Purpose”) blocked briefly the main entrance to the Justice Ministry. Some of them went into the building and wanted to have a meeting with the Justice Minister.

Shortly after 9:00 am, protesters were throwing eggs at the building of the Ministry of Justice.

We will not allow the mafia to write the new Constitution. We will not allow new elections to be held under the control of the mafia, Georgi Georgiev, the leader of "Boets" said.

The protesters from the tent camp outside Sofia University said they were ready to lift the tents as soon as the resignations are submitted.

In the late afternoon, protesting nurses set up a tent camp outside the Health Ministry. They rallied against the poor working conditions and low pay during the coronavirus pandemic. .

On the 40th day of protests against the government and the Chief Prosecutor, President Rumen Radev at 19:00 met with protesters in the coastal city of Varna.
