On day 41 of antigovernment protests, traffic at the crossroads at the University, Council of Ministers and Eagles’ Bridge in Sofia remains blocked.

The protesters demand the resignations of the government and the Chief Prosecutor; early parliamentary elections through machine and electronic voting.

There were no incidents during the protest on August 18. Protest organisers call on the protesters not to succumb to provocations.

Protesters built a “monument of freedom” at the crossroads at Eagles’ Bridge. They used stones and a piece from a narrow-gauge railway.

As part of the routine, about 21:30, the protest went on the procession to Eagles’ Bridge.

About 21:00, a group of protesters went to the building of the Ministry of Interior. The reason was that during an incident with a car last night at the blocked crossroads at Sitnyakovo boulevard (outside the Romanian embassy), there were no police officers. Tomatoes and eggs were thrown at the building of the ministry.

In the evening on August 17, a car, with a female driver and two children travelling in it, tried to get past the blockade by anti-government protesters.

As the car tried to pass through the blocked crossroads, protesters smashed its windscreen. Some protesters say that while attempting to pass, the car hit some of them. The driver denies doing so. The police said there was no information that the car hit people.

The mother, who was driving the car decided not to stop at the protesters’ blockade and tried to pass, because as she explained later, she lived nearby and wanted to take her children home. Her behaviour provoked aggression in the protesters. A protesting woman from the blocked crossroads tried to stop the protesters from banging the car, by shouting that there were children inside. Despite that however, the protesters smashed the windscreen. There were other damages on the car as well. Some protesters attacked the driver with accusations that she was a provocateur.

Three were arrested over the incident. The organisers of the protest said they would pay the expenses for the broken windscreen.
