A break in the dike of an irrigation reservoir located between the villages of Kavrakirovo and Mihnevo in South-western Bulgaria left large areas of agricultural land flooded. The dike failed in the evening on 10th of March.
The torrential rains from the recent days filled in the nearest gully with water and it started overflowing into the irrigation reservoir. On 10th of March, the dam of the reservoir broke as a result of the pressure from the hundreds of litres of water and the nearest farmlands were submerged in water and mud.
The Mayor of Kavrakirovo village, Alexander Trenovski, said that no houses or people were affected, but there were damages for the farmers as all their crops were destroyed and the planted seedings were carried away by the water.
“Irrigation Systems” company, which operates the reservoir, explained that the dike broke because of the bad condition of the gully. It had not been cleaned for years and instead of draining, the water went into the irrigation reservoir.
