Mariya Gabriel, Bulgaria’s EU Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, is the nomination of GERB - UDF for Prime Minister, the leader of GERB Boyko Borissov announced from the parliamentary rostrum on May 10.
"In our mandate, GERB-UDF coalition will nominate Mariya Gabriel as Prime Minister. What is given to Bulgaria and to the Bulgarian commissioner is innovation, research, culture and youth. Topics on which we all have a lot written in our programmes", Borissov said.
In his words, the constitutional deadlines will be met.
Mariya Gabriel was born on May 20, 1979, in Hadzhidimovo, South Western Bulgaria.
In 2001, she graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Bulgarian and French Philology from the “Paisii Hilendarski” University of Plovdiv.
In 2003, she graduated with a Master's Degree in Comparative Politics and International Relations, PhD, from the
Academy for Political Science, Bordeaux, France.
Gabriel has been a member of the European Parliament with the European People's Party (EPP)/GERB since July 14, 2009 and Vice-President of the EPP Women since 2012.
She was Vice-President of the EPP Group in the European Parliament between June 4, 2014, and July 16, 2017.
Gabriel has been European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth since December 1, 2019.
