European Council President, Donald Tusk, and the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, have sent a letter to Turkish President, Recep Erdogan, announcing that they invite him to a meeting in Bulgaria’s Black Sea coastal city of Varna on March 26th. The letter was made public by Tusk’s spokesman.

It states that Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, as the leader of the country holding the rotating Presidency of the Council of the EU, has accepted to host the meeting as a working dinner. The EU leaders invite Erdogan to participate, noting that they welcome Turkey’s efforts to resolve issues of a domestic and European nature.

Tusk and Juncker added that the meeting would provide an opportunity to discuss issues of mutual concern and recent developments in Turkey.

The topics will also include the rule of law and fundamental rights, which are identified as essential for Ankara's future relations with the EU. “This occasion will also serve to share our views on how to move our relationship forward, on the basis of mutual respect and common interests," the letter says.
