On 2nd of December, Bulgaria’s President handed the mandate for forming a government to the largest party in Parliament, the centre-right GERB.
GERB’s leader and outgoing Prime Minister Boyko Borissov returned the mandate, as he previously said. He explained his party would not support the Patriotic Front, if they were handed the mandate, because of serious differences in views on policies. Borissov described Patriotic Front’s demands for higher pensions as populist.
Speaking after the meeting with the President, Borissov said that early elections were the most democratic thing to do and then the people would have its say.
He called on President Plevneliev and President-elect Rumen Radev to nominate a caretaker government, which would prepare and carry out early general elections.
