GERB tabled a draft for a new Constitution to Parliament

The Chairperson of the GERB’s Parliamentary Group, Dr. Daniela Daritkova, on August 17 submitted a draft of a new Constitution of the Republic of Bulgaria to the Parliament, GERB’s press office announced on August 17.

The document was sent to the chairpersons of all parliamentary groups in the 44th National Assembly and MPs who are not members of parliamentary groups.

Thus, GERB invites all parliamentary groups to talks and consultations on the presented draft in order to reach a broad agreement between the MPs to convene a Grand National Assembly.

Invitations for formal consultations will be sent early next week.

As already announced by Prime Minister Borissov, in the draft Constitution, GERB proposes reducing the number of MPs from 240 to 120, reducing the term of office of the Chief Prosecutor from 7 to 5 years, dividing the Supreme Judicial Council into a Judicial Council of Judges and a Judicial Council of Prosecutors and the Chief Prosecutor to be appointed by that of the prosecutors. Another proposal in the draft is the Chief Prosecutor to report to Parliament every 6 months.

The draft for a new Constitution or for amendment of the current one under Art. 158 shall be considered by the National Assembly not earlier than two months and not later than five months after the draft is tabled.

The Grand National Assembly continues to perform the functions of the National Assembly until a new one is elected.
