The Bulgarian government on January 16, made a decision to establish a fully state-owned water and sewerage holding. The newly elected Minister of Environment and Water, Emil Dimitrov, also attended the meeting of the Council of Ministers.

The Council of Ministers regular weekly meeting is held on Thursday, instead of Wednesday, because of yesterday's visit of Prime Minister Borissov to Egypt.

The new water and sewerage holding will be with capital of BGN 1 billion, announced before the beginning of the meeting Minister of Regional Development, Petya Avramova. Its purpose is to unite all water and sewerage companies in the country.

Petya Avramova, Minister of Regional Development and Public Works: The subject of the activity of the Bulgarian Water Supply and Sewerage Holding EAD Sofia will be acquisition and management of participation in companies in the water supply and sewerage sector and companies related to the construction, repair and reconstruction of the water and sewage infrastructure. The Minister of Regional Development and Public Works will exercise the rights of the state. The new holding will be the principal of all water and sewerage companies with state participation in the capital. The purpose is long-term and to provide a sustainable financing model for the water and sewerage sector and related strategic objectives.

Both the new environment minister and the economy minister told the Prime Minister that they fully agree with the project. He criticized most water and sewerage companies in the country saying that despite the available EU funds, have not been involved in the construction of water cycles. According to him, the water cycle in Pernik should have been completed long ago. Borissov gave several tasks to his ministers: one is related to import and export of waste, the others were related to drinking water and electricity generation.

The decision of the government comes days after minister of environment Neno Dimov submitted resignation as it was announced he was facing charges of deliberate mismanagement in connection with the water shortages in the town of Pernik. The resignation was accepted by Prime Minister Boyko Borissov.

Minister of Environment and Water, Neno Dimov, on January 10 was accused of deliberate mismanagement. According to the evidence gathered by the Prosecutor's Office, for more than a year and a half since the beginning of 2018, Neno Dimov, was informed monthly by the head of the Water Supply and Sewerage company in Pernik about the state of Studena Dam and the decrease of water quantities in it.
