Sofia municipality jointly with the Embassy of the Netherlands in Bulgaria organises a number of initiatives in support of the campaign “I Ride a Bicycle, Follow Me”. The first and most significant event for 2016 will take place on Saturday and Sunday, 9th and 10th of April, simultaneously in the capital Sofia and the South Bulgarian city of Plovdiv.
It will be part of the European cycling festival, organised by the Netherlands embassy in the capital cities of EU member states. The aim of the campaign, which will be held in Bulgaria for third consecutive year, is to promote the use of bicycles in the urban environment and develop cycling in the capital.
Tom J.M. van Oorschot, the Dutch Ambassador to Bulgaria, said that the idea was to introduce the public to the benefits of riding a bicycle – healthy lifestyle and a better urban environment. In our concept, this fits into the smart green cities, the concept that would make our cities more comfortable and pleasant to live in, he added.
Ivan Ilchev, a marketing expert in a bicycles factory has said that more than 30 Bulgarian famous personalities have taken part in the initiative so far and 7 more are expected to join the campaign this year.
