The ice on the Bulgarian stretch of the Danube river halted shipping on 12th of January. 21 vessels are at anchor near Silistra. The crews have food for ten days. After that, if needed, deliveries will be made by helicopter.
Six of the vessels are in the region of the port in Silistra, the other 15 are near the villages of Garvan, Polina and Vetren.
The ships are under Ukrainian, Romanian and Bulgarian flag. They are not stuck or stranded, but are waiting at anchor, the River Supervision unit in Silistra explained.
For the time being, the low water level is not posing a risk for the vessels, which are near the banks and are not placed in winter shelter, the unit added.
