Intense traffic on Bulgaria’s main roads is expected ahead of the Christmas holidays. The busiest roads are expected to be at the exits of Bulgaria’s capital city Sofia on the motorways Trakia, Hemus and Struma and the road to Kulata border crossing.
Due to ongoing repair works of the tunnels Echemishka and Vitinya, the passage through these facilities in the two directions will be carried out through the tunnel lanes in direction to Sofia. Route detours will be available for this section of the motorway in order to avoid queues of vehicles.
More than 200,000 cars are expected to leave the capital. In order to ease traffic on the main highways, restrictions will be introduced from 16.00 to 20.00 on 23rd of December for the movement of lorries weighing over 12 tonness on motorways and the busiest roads. The restrictions are aimed to improve safety. Road Infrastructure Agency reminds drivers to make sure the vehicles are prepared for winter conditions, to drive cautiously and at the appropriate speed.
