Ivan Geshev took the oath of office as Bulgaria’s Chief Prosecutor on December 18. At a solemn ceremony at the Court Palace building, the newly elected head of state public prosecutor's is replacing his predecessor, Sotir Tsatsarov, whose term expires.

The ceremony was attended by Parliament Speaker Tsveta Karayancheva, constitutional judges, Interior Minister Mladen Marinov and Justice minister Danail Kirilov, former chief prosecutors and members of the Supreme Judicial Council.

After swearing in, Ivan Geshev promised the prosecutor's office to be more open to the public and to justify the expectations for more justice.

In his speech, Geshev said he would work for better cooperation with the institutions. The new chief Prosecutor aknowledged that he was expecting a difficult term. He read quotations from Lincoln and Vassil Levski and stated that one can walk slowly, but never backwards, and act, not just talk.

On October 24, SJC approved Ivan Geshev as Bulgaria’s Chief Prosecutor. He was the only candidate for the post.

The nomination was subject to approval by Bulgaria's President. On November 7, he refused to approve the appointment of Ivan Geshev as chief prosecutor and returned the proposal back to the SJC.

In a repeat vote on November 14, Bulgaria’s Supreme Judicial Council voted to approve the election of Ivan Geshev as the next chief prosecutor.
