Minister Pavlova: Europe Has Returned to the Global Stage as a Serious Factor

At the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Bulgaria’s Prime Minister took part in two formats on one of the most important topics - the Western Balkans, Lilyana Pavlova, Minister of the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the EU, told BNT on 30th of January. She added that the atmosphere created in Davos allows for more informal contacts with the business and between government leaders.

She stressed that Europe was the focus of attention this year. "Europe has returned to the global stage as a serious factor, and it has returned with self-confidence, with very strong speeches by Chancellor Merkel and President Macron. The formats were very interesting. Bulgaruia’s participation was importan and the meetings of the heads of state on the theme" Balkans" and on “The New Europe. What Europe we want as a factor”.

According to Lilyana Pavlova, Bulgaria has attracted the attention of the business that took part in the forum, and proof of this is the fact that there are talks about conducting "Mini Davos", as this time world leaders in the business and investors will be invited to Bulgaria. This meeting is important in the context of job creation. During the European Presidency, our priority is to convince the business to invest here and stay here, Pavlova said.

Lilyiana Pavlova stressed that Bulgaria's success was that the topic for the Western Balkans was returned to the pan-European agenda, "because there are a number of EU member states, for which this topic is not a priority and they do not like it," she said. The strategy for the Western Balkans comes out on February 6, she said, and explained that the document was the preparatory part of the Summit.

We set two important goals for the summit: one to persuade all in the long term and to have the clear agreement of the leaders in Europe that the Western Balkans are our long-term priority not only during the Bulgarian and Austrian presidencies.

She pointed out that, during the EU presidency, Bulgaria should clear the image of the Western Balkans from the belief that these are countries that create only problems.

The Minister of the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the EU said that our country is currently working on a Turkey-Europe meeting in the format: "President Tusk, Jean Claude Juncker, Prime Minister Borissov, Erdogan and Mogerini. This is the format of a high-level meeting at which important talks on EU-Turkey relations will take place," Pavlova said.
