Famous monuments in Sofia “woke up” on 31st of January with gas masks against air pollution. A sign was placed under the monument to Aleko Konstantinov “I see smog, I do not see Vitosha mountain”.
The idea for the initiative comes from the Spasi Sofia watchdog organisation (translated Save Sofia) and aims at attracting public attention to the quality of the air we breathe. The initiators believe the campaign would focus the attention of both institutions and the public to the issue.
Members of the public passing by the monuments welcomed the idea and recognized that air pollution was a joint responsibility. Despite that many liked the idea, the masks were removed from the monuments in the morning.
