Parliament's legal affairs committee on July 5 rejected the proposal to hold a national referendum on keeping the Bulgarian lev as the only official currency until 2043.
After more than three and a half hours of debate, the proposal for a referendum, initiated by "Vazrazhdane" party, was not passed by the committee, but will still be considered in plenary chamber.
Constitutional law experts pointed out that the Parliament is competent to consider the referendum proposal but is not obliged to hold it. During the debate, tensions arose between MPs from "Vazrazhdane" and their colleague from “We Continue the Change-Democratic Bulgaria”, Yavor Bozhankov. He was interrupted and the MP Konstantina Petrova accused him of taking pictures of her legs. Bozhankov denied and said that she tried to take his phone.
