On 5th of May, Bulgaria’s Parliament established an ad-hoc committee to decide on the Chief Prosecutor’s request for lifting the immunity from criminal prosecution of of Volya party leader and MP Vesselin Mareshki. The committee will consist of 10 MPs, two from each parliamentary group and will be headed by Hristian Mitev from the United Patriots.
The committee is established at the proposal of Parliament’s Speaker Dimitar Glavchev following the request by the Chief Prosecutor for lifting the immunity of MP Mareshki.
Vesselin Mareshki is facing criminal proceedings on charges of assaulting a municipal councilor and blackmailing an owner of a restaurant.
Since Mareshki has not given up his MP immunity, the comitte will examine within a week if there is enough evidence that a crime has been committed by Mareshki. After that it will propose a decision in relation to the chief Prosecutor’s request.
"I will give up my immunity after the first meeting of the commitee," Mareshki said. “I did not run in the elections in order to acquire immunity, but I will use the situation to give it maximum publicity, because I will not allow to be 'cooked' in the dark, like they're trying to do", he said.
