Partial state of emergency was declared on the night on 28th of June in the municipality of Sadovo, South Bulgaria. The Chaya River overflew and caused dike failure. The road to the village of Katunitsa is closed.
The level of drainage is currently significantly lower than what was last night. Thousands of cubic metres of water have flooded farmlands. Hundreds of thousands of acres of sunflower, maize and other crops were destroyed. According to the executive director of irrigation systems, the dike of the Chaya River to Katunitsa has not failed. Rather, the river has failed to absorb the huge amounts of water from the rain. Last night, 120 litres per square metre were reported to have fallen at Rozhen peak.
Farmers think that the dike was not properly strengthened when it was undergoing a repair several months ago.
The partial state of emergency remains in place. It is expected to be cancelled in the early afternoon if there is no rainfall.
Yesterday, and Saedinenie was on the edge of declaring state of emergency. This morning, the situation was much better. There are no streets, yards or houses flooded.
